Insomnia & Sleep Restoration
Insomnia means trouble falling or staying asleep, or waking too early and feeling unrefreshed. In Ayurveda, restful sleep is called Nidra, and broken sleep is often linked to Vata, the principle of movement.
Our sleep care combines a routine review, herbs where suitable and therapies such as Shirodhara. It complements, and never replaces, your medical, psychiatric and specialist care.

In classical texts, restless sleep is linked to Vata out of balance, and heat-driven sleeplessness to Pitta, the principle of heat.
Common Signs
- A long time to fall asleep, or waking often and struggling to return to sleep
- Waking too early, or feeling unrefreshed, foggy or irritable by day
Precautions & When to See a Doctor
- Do not stop or change prescribed medicines, including sleep tablets and antidepressants, on your own. Some need a gradual reduction.
- Ashwagandha may interact with other medicines. A 2021 review says it generally appears safe, but its interactions with prescribed drugs still need study [7]. Tell us everything you take. Do not take herbs during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless your doctor has approved them. Tell us first if you have liver, thyroid or autoimmune disease, so we can check any herb before you start.
- See a doctor if sleep trouble lasts several weeks despite good habits.
- Snoring with breathing pauses, gasping at night or daytime sleepiness can signal sleep apnoea, which needs a medical sleep test.
- See a doctor promptly for persistent low mood, loss of interest or hopelessness.
- If you are in crisis or thinking of harming yourself, call Tele-MANAS 14416 (free, 24×7) or 112 now.

Sleep Habits and Daily Routine
In traditional Ayurveda, a steady daily routine supports sleep, but no study cited here tests routine on its own. In one randomised trial of people with insomnia, yoga ranked first, Ayurvedic practice second and a control group third for sleep and stress [1]. That trial compared yoga and Ayurvedic practice, not a daily routine.
Shirodhara
Shirodhara (from the Sanskrit words for head and flow) is a steady stream of warm medicated oil over the forehead.
- A randomised study in three groups of 10 patients tested a proposed herbal tablet, Shirodhara alone, or both together. The combined group showed highly significant improvement, the other two groups showed significant improvement, and the authors reported no adverse effects during the trial [2].
- A case series suggested Shirodhara with Brahmi oil, a traditional herb, may help moderate to severe insomnia, and called for larger studies [3].
Both are small, so Shirodhara is one part of a wider plan.
Herbs: What the Evidence Shows
Herbs are used alongside lifestyle care, never instead of prescribed medicine. Ashwagandha (*Withania somnifera*), a traditional herb, shows the most consistent signals of benefit for sleep, though overall certainty is low [4].
- A 2026 narrative review found preliminary signs of benefit for standardised ashwagandha, but low overall certainty, due to risk of bias, indirect evidence, poor standardisation and no long-term safety data [4].
- In a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of people with insomnia and anxiety, 300 mg of ashwagandha root extract twice daily for 10 weeks improved sleep quality and time to fall asleep. The authors say larger studies are needed [5].
- Two traditional formulas, Mamsyadi Ghana capsule and Saraswatarishta, reported effects comparable to zolpidem, a prescription sleep medicine, with a good safety profile. One trial needs confirmation [6].
Counselling and Psychological Support
Cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) is a structured talking therapy. Our counselling is not a named CBT-I programme. Our Clinical Psychologist offers psychological assessment and counselling in English and Hindi. Contact us to ask about a session. For a structured CBT-I course, ask your doctor.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can Ayurveda fix insomnia for good?
We cannot promise that; results depend on the cause and how long it has lasted.
Can I take herbs with sleeping tablets?
Only after we check exactly what you take. Never stop sleeping tablets on your own.
Is Shirodhara suitable for everyone?
Not always. It is avoided during fever or after a recent head injury, and some other conditions also rule it out, so we check your health history first.
