Hair Fall

Losing 50 to 100 hairs a day is normal. Hair fall becomes a concern when shedding increases, the hair thins, or bald patches appear. An Ayurvedic consultation suits people whose hair fall is ongoing or has changed, and who want the cause looked into alongside medical care. Common causes include stress, illness or surgery, thyroid problems, iron or vitamin deficiency, PCOS, hormonal changes after childbirth, genetic (pattern) hair loss and harsh hair treatments. In Ayurveda, hair fall is Khalitya, linked to aggravated Pitta (the body’s heat and fire energy) affecting the hair roots, with Vata (movement energy) and Kapha (structure and fluid energy) involvement.

Common Patterns

  • Diffuse shedding a few months after stress, fever or childbirth (telogen effluvium)
  • Gradual thinning at the crown or hairline (pattern hair loss)
  • Round bald patches (alopecia areata), which needs medical assessment

Assessment & Treatment

  1. Consultation on the pattern, diet, stress, sleep, medicines and recent illnesses, with blood tests if needed (thyroid, iron, vitamin B12, vitamin D).
  2. A nourishing, Pitta-balancing diet and stress care.
  3. Herbal medicines and scalp oils chosen for you.
  4. Ayurvedic Head Massage and, where suitable, Nasya. None of the studies cited on this page tested either treatment for hair fall.

Precautions & When to See a Doctor

See a doctor for sudden or patchy hair loss, hair loss with scalp pain, scaling or scarring, or hair loss with tiredness, weight change or irregular periods. Also see a doctor if shedding lasts more than six months, starts after a new medicine, or comes with extra facial or body hair, acne or a deeper voice. Some hair loss needs medical or dermatological treatment. Ayurvedic care works alongside medical care, not instead of it. Do not stop or reduce prescribed medicines, including thyroid medicines, without advice from your doctor. Herbs are not suitable for everyone: do not take herbal medicines during pregnancy or breastfeeding without medical advice, and tell us about all your current medicines and any liver disease before starting. Herbs such as Ashwagandha may interact with thyroid, blood-pressure, diabetes, blood-thinning or sedative medicines. Do a patch test on a small area of skin before using a new scalp oil.

What the Evidence Shows
  • A 2026 randomised, placebo-controlled trial in healthy adults found that a specific Ashwagandha root extract capsule, taken by mouth for 75 days, improved hair density and growth compared with placebo [1]. People with hair fall were not included, so the trial does not show what happens in hair fall.
  • One randomised, double-blind study of a specific polyherbal hair oil (Neeli Bhringraj) in androgenetic alopecia suggested possible benefit for the hair growth cycle and reported less premature greying [2].
  • A systematic review of herbal remedies identified several plants with randomised-trial support, while noting the need for better studies [3].
  • A 2025 narrative review describes how Ayurvedic treatments are used for hair disorders. It summarises practice and does not test whether they work [4].

Overall, the evidence is limited. It is not yet strong enough to show that these treatments work for hair fall. Results depend on the cause of hair loss and the specific product studied.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will oiling stop my hair fall?

Oiling and scalp massage may support scalp health, but hair fall has many causes that need to be found and treated.

How long until I see results?

Hair grows slowly, so changes usually take at least three months.

Is hair fall after childbirth normal?

Yes, shedding a few months after delivery is common and usually settles. See Postnatal Care.
