Neck Pain
Neck pain is often caused by posture, long hours at a desk or on a phone, muscle strain, or age-related changes in the spine (cervical spondylosis). In Ayurveda it is described as Manyastambha or Greevagraha (neck stiffness), mainly due to Vata (the energy of movement and dryness), sometimes with Kapha (the energy of heaviness and moisture).

Precautions & When to See a Doctor
Seek urgent care for neck pain with arm weakness, clumsy hands, problems walking or balancing, loss of bladder or bowel control, severe sudden headache, fever with neck stiffness, or after an accident or fall. Call 112 straight away for sudden dizziness, double vision, slurred speech, face or limb weakness, or chest pain or pressure (especially with breathlessness or sweating), or pain spreading to the jaw or left arm. See a doctor promptly for unexplained weight loss, pain at night that does not ease, or a history of cancer. Ayurvedic care complements your medical care and does not replace it.

What the Evidence Shows
A clinical study reported benefit from Greeva Basti in cervical spondylosis [1], and a randomised trial found that adding Nasya to herbal medicine reduced signs and symptoms more than herbal medicine alone [2]. An observational study described an Ayurvedic treatment approach for neck stiffness [3]. These studies are small, and a systematic review of Indian traditional medicine (Ayush) treatments for cervical and lumbar spondylosis found that only one in eight studies reported any adverse event, so side effects may be under-reported [4].
