Ayurvedic name: Shirodhara

Shirodhara

Shirodhara is a deeply relaxing Ayurvedic therapy in which a steady stream of warm medicated oil, or sometimes medicated buttermilk or milk, is poured gently and continuously over the forehead. It is used mainly for stress, poor sleep and tension, and is a core part of our stress programme.

Who It May Suit

  • Chronic stress and burnout
  • Difficulty falling or staying asleep
  • Tension headaches
  • Anxiety, alongside medical care

Precautions & Safety

Shirodhara is avoided with fever, colds and congestion, recent head injury, scalp wounds or infection, and very low blood pressure, and is usually avoided in early pregnancy. Because you may feel drowsy, avoid driving straight afterwards and keep your head warm. It complements, and does not replace, treatment for anxiety, depression or sleep disorders.

What to Expect
  1. Gentle head and body massage to begin.
  2. You lie on your back with your eyes covered; warm oil flows in a steady stream over the forehead for about 30 to 45 minutes.
  3. You rest afterwards. Many people feel deeply relaxed or drowsy.
What the Evidence Shows
  • In healthy volunteers, standardised Shirodhara produced a state of “alert calmness” similar to the relaxation response seen in meditation [1].
  • A randomised study reported anxiety-reducing effects and changes in stress-related nervous-system activity [2].
  • A small EEG study recorded brain-wave patterns associated with relaxation after Shirodhara [3].
  • In people with high blood pressure, a 2025 meta-analysis found that Shirodhara significantly lowered diastolic blood pressure [4].
  • A small trial in insomnia studied Shirodhara alongside a herbal tablet [5].

The evidence is encouraging but most studies are small, so Shirodhara is best used as part of a wider plan.
