Psychosomatic Pain & Tension Headaches
Tension-type headache is a dull, pressing pain across the head, neck and shoulders. It can be linked with stress and muscle tightness. The pain is real, even when scans find nothing, so a doctor should always rule out other causes first. Psychosomatic means that mind and body affect each other, so our care looks at both.

Precautions & When to See a Doctor
Get emergency care now (call 112 or go to the nearest emergency department) for a sudden, severe headache or the worst headache of your life; weakness, numbness, drooping face, slurred speech, confusion, double vision, a fit or loss of balance; fever with a stiff neck; a headache after a head injury; severe eye pain or redness with headache; repeated vomiting with headache; or a headache in pregnancy with swelling or high blood pressure. See your doctor soon for a new headache after age 50; a headache that wakes you from sleep or gets worse lying down, coughing or straining; headaches that become more frequent or change; or painkillers needed on most days.
Do not stop prescribed medicines, including painkillers, without talking to your doctor, and tell them if you need painkillers often. Ayurvedic care is complementary to your medical and psychiatric care.
If you are in crisis or thinking of harming yourself, call Tele-MANAS 14416 (free, 24×7) or 112 now.
Who Should Not Start Care Without Medical Advice
Tell us before starting if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have liver or kidney disease, take blood thinners, antidepressants or other psychiatric medicines, have epilepsy, have a neck condition such as cervical spondylosis or a slipped disc, or have had recent neck or head surgery. Herbal medicines can interact with medicines. Mention any recent head or neck injury or skin infection before oil, heat or massage therapy.

How Ayurveda Understands It
Ayurveda links this pattern with Vata, the energy of movement that governs nerves and muscles. Stress is seen as unsettling Vata, which may show up as neck and scalp tightness. This is a traditional view, not a proven mechanism. For neck pain as the main problem, see Neck Pain.
What the Evidence Shows
Evidence is very limited. We did not find a published clinical trial of Ayurvedic treatment for this headache type.
- Migraine studies (a different condition): Ayurveda with yoga was linked with less pain and better quality of life [1]. A non-randomised, open-label study reported less migraine disability, stress and muscle tension, but it cannot show cause and effect [2]. A narrative review found Ayurveda beneficial for migraine, but noted small samples and short follow-up [3].
Greeva Basti and Ayurvedic head massage have not been tested for tension-type headache in the studies we found.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will this stop my headaches?
We cannot promise that. Ayurvedic care aims to ease pain and support daily life, and results vary.
Is tension headache imaginary?
No. The pain is real, and a doctor should rule out other causes first.
Do I need counselling?
Not always. A psychological assessment can help us understand whether stress, worry or low mood is part of your pattern.
