What the Evidence Shows
- In healthy volunteers, standardised Shirodhara produced a state of “alert calmness” similar to the relaxation response in meditation [1].
- A randomised study found anxiety-reducing effects and changes in stress-related physiology after Shirodhara [2].
- A pilot study found that Abhyanga reduced subjective stress and lowered heart rate [3].
- A meta-analysis in high blood pressure found that Shirodhara significantly lowered diastolic blood pressure [4].
- In patients with breast cancer, Shirodhara helped relaxation and psychological distress [5].
- A randomised trial of a whole-system Ayurveda protocol in major depressive disorder reported benefit with fewer side effects, alongside the need for further study [6].
For insomnia, a 2026 narrative review found preliminary signals of benefit but overall low certainty of evidence [7]. These studies are encouraging but mostly small.
