Ayurvedic name: Rasayana programme

Panchakarma Rejuvenation (Rasayana)

Rasayana is the branch of Ayurveda concerned with rejuvenation, vitality and healthy ageing. A rejuvenation programme usually follows gentle cleansing and combines nourishing therapies, Rasayana herbs, diet and rest. It is aimed at people who are basically well but run down, recovering, or wanting to age healthily.

What the Evidence Shows
  • Ashwagandha, a classical Rasayana, improved memory and attention in adults with mild cognitive impairment in a randomised trial [1]. In overweight men aged 40 to 70, it raised DHEA-S and testosterone levels compared with placebo, but did not improve fatigue or vigour more than placebo [2].
  • In older adults with mild cognitive impairment, a non-randomised study found that Rasayana and integrated yoga each improved cognitive measures, with greater benefit when combined [3].
  • Reviews describe Ayurveda’s concepts of ageing [4] and the research on Triphala [5] and Ashwagandha [6].
  • Abhyanga reduced subjective stress in a pilot study [7].

Herbal studies used specific standardised extracts, which may differ from clinic preparations. Evidence for rejuvenation as a whole programme is limited.
