Ayurvedic name: Paschatkarma (Samsarjana Krama)

Panchakarma Aftercare (Paschatkarma)

After the main Panchakarma procedure, digestion is temporarily weak and the body needs to rebuild gently. Aftercare, or Paschatkarma, protects the benefits of treatment and prevents problems. Many people underestimate this stage.

The Graded Recovery Diet (Samsarjana Krama)

For several days, food is reintroduced in a set sequence, from thin rice water to thicker gruel, then soups and lentils, and finally normal meals. The number of days depends on the procedure and how strong the cleanse was. A case study describes how this graded diet was used to restore weak digestion [1].

Precautions & Safety

Do not return to heavy, spicy, fried or cold food immediately. Seek help urgently for severe weakness, fainting, persistent vomiting or diarrhoea, blood in the stool, fever or chest pain.

After Recovery: Keeping the Benefit
What the Evidence Shows

In eczema, patients who received Virechana before herbal treatment had fewer recurrences [3]. Small follow-up studies of Ayurvedic treatment programmes for fibromyalgia reported improvements maintained at six and 24 months [4, 5]. These are small studies, but they support planned aftercare and follow-up.
