Muscle Pain
Muscle pain can follow strain or overuse, poor posture, long hours of sitting, stress or poor sleep. Widespread long-term muscle pain with tiredness may be fibromyalgia. In Ayurveda, muscle pain and stiffness are often described as Mamsagata Vata: Vata affecting the muscle tissue. If your pain is mainly in the back, neck or shoulder, see Back Pain, Neck Pain or Shoulder Pain. We start with an assessment to find the cause, then may suggest oil massage, herbs and posture advice. It suits people with ongoing aches or stiffness who want support alongside medical care. This care is complementary to your doctor’s care, not a replacement for it.

Precautions & When to See a Doctor
Get prompt medical care for sudden severe pain after an injury, a fall or heavy exercise, muscle pain with unexplained weight loss or night sweats, or stiffness in the shoulders or hips that lasts over an hour each morning in people over 50. See a doctor if the pain does not improve within two weeks. See a doctor for muscle pain with weakness, dark urine, fever or rash; pain that started after a new medicine (for example cholesterol-lowering statins); or calf pain and swelling, which could be a blood clot. Do not massage or apply heat to a swollen or painful calf until a doctor has ruled out a clot. Oil massage and heat therapy are also not suitable during fever, on broken skin or over an acute injury. Do not stop prescribed medicines, including statins, without speaking to your doctor first.

What the Evidence Shows
Overall, the evidence is limited.
- In a 2026 randomised trial in college students, daily self-massage combined with stretching improved hamstring flexibility and reduced muscle stiffness more than stretching alone. [1].
- A study of a branded polyherbal oil (Ayush Tulsi Jiwan Plus) reported it effective and safe for use on the skin in chronic musculoskeletal pain. The authors say larger samples and long-term data are needed [2].
- In fibromyalgia, a non-randomised pilot study found that adding Ayurvedic treatment to standard care was no worse than standard care alone in people with severe fibromyalgia. Both groups improved, so the study did not show that Ayurveda added benefit. The authors call for randomised trials of Ayurveda alone [3]. A Norwegian pilot study reported that improvements were still present six months after treatment [4].
- A 2024 systematic review of complementary therapies for fibromyalgia found that most trials reported benefits, but the treatments and outcomes varied so much that more studies are needed. Ayurvedic medicine was one of four groups reviewed [5].
