Janu Basti (Knee Oil Therapy)
Janu Basti is a local Ayurvedic therapy for the knee. A ring of black-gram dough is built around the knee and filled with warm medicated oil, which is kept warm for a set time. It is used for knee pain and stiffness, especially in osteoarthritis (Janu Sandhigata Vata), usually alongside other treatment.

What to Expect
- You lie on your back; a dough ring is shaped around the knee.
- Warm oil is poured in and kept at a comfortable warmth for about 30 to 45 minutes.
- The knee is gently massaged and may be treated with local steam or a herbal poultice.
- A course of sessions is usual, often combined with herbal medicines and exercises.
What the Evidence Shows
We could not find a controlled trial testing Janu Basti on its own. Evidence comes from studies of combined Ayurvedic treatment for knee osteoarthritis, such as oil Basti [1], Matra Basti with herbal medicine [2], herbal poultice therapy with herbal medicine [3] and multimodal programmes [4]. A large randomised trial found that a whole Ayurvedic treatment approach improved knee osteoarthritis [5]. A review noted that most studies test only parts of the classical treatment rather than the complete approach [6].
So Janu Basti is best seen as one part of a supervised plan, not a stand-alone cure.
